MoCCA, the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art, has transferred its assets to the Society of Illustrators, the organizations announced, ending MoCCA’s existence as an independent organization. Assets transferred include the organization’s art collection and the MoCCA Fest name.
MoCCA’s art collection will be housed in a gallery in the Society’s building. The Society will also curate a special exhibition of works from MoCCA’s Permanent Collection in its Hall of Fame Gallery along with a special exhibit, “The Comic Art of Harvey Kurtzman,” curated by Monte Beauchamp, March 5 to May 4, 2013. Lectures, workshops, and a film and music series are planned in conjunction with the exhibits.
The Society will also continue to stage MoCCA Fest in its current location.
The Society of Illustrators was founded in 1901 and has had many comic artists among its members over the years, including Will Eisner, Milton Caniff, Al Capp, Mort Walkler, Winsor McCay, Rube Goldberg, Chic Young, Ernie Bushmiller, Al Jaffee, Mort Drucker, and Jack Davis.
