Marvel Studios announced Scott Derrickson as the director for its upcoming Doctor Strange feature, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Derrickson was not on the original list of candidates under consideration in February (see "Development Work on 'Doctor Strange' Underway").
Derrickson wrote and directed the PG-13 horror movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose, as well as the R-rated horror film Sinister and the straight-to-video Hellraiser: Inferno. His big--budget Hollywood director credit is the 2008 remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still.
Doctor Strange, aka Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange, was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and first appeared in Strange Tales #110 in July 1963. Dr. Strange is a former neurosurgeon turned mystical practitioner and is Earth’s primary protector against mystical and magical threats.
