Spoiler Alert: To understand why this particular clip, which Marvel Studios and Disney appear to have released as a sort of “thank you” to fans, is so special, you really have to see James Gunn’s remarkable Guardians of the Galaxy film. However it can still be appreciated for its inspired use of the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back”—and it makes it easy to understand why the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack, which consists of 1970s and 80s classics from Peter Quill’s mixtape, is the bestselling CD/Song Collection in the country right now.
Guardians of the Galaxy, which will pass the $200 million mark at the domestic box office today or Friday by the latest, becoming the 7th film to attain that mark so far in the summer movie season of 2014, got off to a great start by shattering the August box office debut record (see “Guardians Sets New August Record”). While there is a Funko Guardians of the Galaxy Groot Bobble-Head Figure that sort of looks like a Baby Groot, Hasbro’s failure to create a Dancing Baby Groot toy has to look like a major opportunity lost.
Actually Disney is putting a major licensing push on Guardians and Hasbro put out a very extensive line of toys for such an unproven property. Other Marvel licensees like Upper Deck (see “Legendary: Guardians of the Galaxy”) and Wiz Kids (see “Marvel HeroClix: Guardians of the Galaxy”) have also followed suit and should also stand to gain from what appears to be one of the most successful property launches in a long time.
