Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?, the graphic novel memoir by Roz Chast, has been nominated for the National Book Award; it made the "nonfiction longlist." It’s one of ten nonfiction titles that will be cut down to five in October; the winner is announced on November 19th.
This is the first time a graphic novel has been nominated in an adult category, although three have been finalists in the "Young People’s Literature" category. Gene Luen Yang’s American Born Chinese was the first, back in 2006 (see "'American Born Chinese' a Finalist").
Chast’s book has blown up in the book channel over the summer, where it sold like crazy. It has not appeared on a Diamond Top 300 list, which shows the best sellers in the comic store channel, to date.
