Possible Major Spoiler Alert: Did David Letterman let the "bat out of the (body) bag" during his interview with actress Anne Hathaway, who plays Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, which opens next weekend? It does appear that the CBS late night host has had a chance to see the movie. He praised the film effusively, pointing to the film’s 2 hour and 45-minute running time (but noting that the movie flies by), before dropping his verbal bombshell, “And in the end, Batman is dead.”
Hathaway was momentarily shaken, but recovered her poise with aplomb, and replied with an exasperated, "Daave." Letterman quickly backtracked, saying that the Dark Knight didn’t die. "You know that’s a whole thing, right?" she retorted indicating to Letterman that he had waded into the middle of a controversial subject. Letterman finished it off with a, "He ain’t dead, relax."
So did Letterman reveal the deepest, best kept secret about The Dark Knight Rises? Hathway continued, "I just want you to know the wrath that you have invited onto yourself," before she apologized to Nolan, saying, "I had no part in this, I am sorry." Her comments might indicate that Dave had been right the first time, but there is no telling when it comes to the snarky Letterman, who loves to put on everyone including his guests and his audience. Was it a gaffe or a jape? The answer will be clear in less than a week.
The crucial exchange comes near the end of the interview, just after the 9 minute mark.
