IDW Publishing will publish comics from digital comics web portal Thrillbent in print beginning with Empire, by Mark Waid and Barry Kitson, for Spring 2015.  Empire, which Waid describes as "the single most-asked about project" in his career, was originally an Eisner-nominated Image Comics and DC series (see "Eisner Award Nominations Announced") from the early 00s.  IDW will first release a new edition of Empire Volume 1, reprinting the stories from that era, and then release a new collection, Empire Vol. 2, with the Thrillbent Empire stories.

Thrillbent was launched in 2012 by Waid and writer/producer John Roberts, and has been home to nearly 20 ongoing digital-only series by over 60 creators.

IDW also announced that it will release Insufferable, by Waid and Peter Krause, the same team that did Irredeemable in 2007, for Spring.  Only six months after Thrillbent launched, in early 2013, Waid told ICv2 that Insufferable had already been read by over 600,000 people (see "Mark Waid Talks 'Thrillbent,' More").

The Thrillbent comics will have to be reworked to be published in print form, Waid told ICv2 last year, to translate pages designed for digital-first release to the print medium.  For example, in some cases in the digital medium, word balloons are added to the same page as the reader clicks or swipes ahead to indicate the order of speakers, rather than having the reader’s eyes follow the order of word balloons from right to left and top to bottom.  "It doesn’t mean we’ll have to change the story," Waid said, "but it does mean we’ll have to do some heavy surgery on some of the word balloon placement, some of the images."
