IDW Publishing will release a comic sequel to David Cronenberg’s science fiction horror film The Fly, launching in March.
The five-issue miniseries will be written by Brandon Seifert (Hellraiser, Witch Doctor, Disney Kingdoms: Seekers of the Weird), with art and main covers by menton3 (Silent Hill, Monocyte). Variant covers will be done by Jason Edmiston and Lukas Ketner.
The story will pick up many years after the film, with Seth Brundle’s almost-human son continuing to search for a cure for the mutated genes. But his breakthrough turns into an outbreak, with anyone exposed at risk of turning into a monster.
“To be totally honest, The Fly is one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen!" said Seifert. "It was really resonant for its time. And in the last 20 years or so, with all the advances in Genetically Modified Organisms, the film has taken on a lot of meaning it didn't originally have. It's really exciting to explore those elements in this miniseries — and great to have an amazing, super-distinctive artist like menton3 on the visuals!"
Cronenberg’s award-winning 1986 film was based loosely on a 1957 short story by George Langelaan, which had also been the basis for the 1958 film. The movie was a commercial success, and Jeff Goldblum, who played the ill-fated scientist Seth Brundle, received many critical accolades.
