Australian publisher Games Lab has launched Final War, a card-based tactical war game that can be expanded like a collectible card game.  The first set, Onslaught, now has limited availability in the U.S., while Games Lab seeks a U.S. distribution partner.

Final War is set in a medieval fantasy world where armies of chaos and good struggle for control of the all-powerful Gem of Making, while shadowy guilds of thieves and assassins maneuver in the background.

In the game, each player uses their own deck of cards, which include heroes and units to fight their battles, as well as spells and power cards that can support them.  A shared “Fate Deck” controls the flow of the game, determining when random events such as wandering monster attacks, plagues, and other disasters occur.  The Fate Deck also controls when battles between players occur.  Battles are then resolved in a tactical way, using card abilities and dice to determine the effectiveness of attacks between the units and heroes each player has deployed.

The first set for the game Final War:  Onslaught weighs in at a massive five pounds, and includes everything needed for two- or three-player games.  A fourth player can be added with material from a second base set.  The boxed set comes with 3 Warlords, 3 large fully mounted game boards, 213 cards, 210 tokens, and 7 12-sided dice.  MSRP is $69.99.

Players can expand their game with randomly packed 12-card booster packs, which allow players to customize their Warlord decks like they would when playing a typical collectible card game.  MSRP is $3.99 per pack.

Games Lab plans to release two more base sets in the next 12 months:  Arcane, built around three spell-casting Warlords, and Carnage with combat-based Warlords.  These sets are expected to release in Australia in November, and in the U.S. in January.  In addition, non-randomized expansion packs called Veteran and Epic Modules will offer players who do not want CCG-style play a way to add more cards to the game.  The Modules are expected to release in August.
