Dreamworks has announced its first weekend sales for the Shrek 2 home video release:  12.1 million units (11 million of them DVDs), at an estimated $185 million in retail dollars.  This blows away the sales on the first Shrek video release of around 7 million units at $110 million in its first weekend almost exactly three years ago.

Of course, the comparison Dreamworks is looking for is to the box office release of Pixar/Disney's The Incredibles, which did around $70.5 million over the weekend (see 'Super Opening for 'The Incredibles'').  Dreamworks scheduled its Shrek 2 video release against the opening of The Incredibles (see 'Dreamworks vs. Disney, Round 2'), just as three years ago the video release of Shrek was scheduled against the theatrical release of Monsters, Inc.  (see 'Shrek Video Shreds Monsters, Inc.').
