Frank Miller's 300 was the number two graphic novel in units and the number one book in dollar sales for the week ending February18th according to the BookScan survey of graphic novel sales in bookstores. With Zack Snyder's film of 300 opening on March 9, sales of Miller's graphic novel have been building steadily since the beginning of the year. Tokyopop's Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories Vol.2 was the bestselling (in units) title of the week and Loveless Vol.4, another Tokyopop title was at number four, reaffirming its status as the bestselling shonen ai (boys' love) series ever released in the U.S.
Viz Media's Bleach Vol.17 slipped to the number three spot after two weeks at number one. So far in 2007 the entire Bleach series appears to be doing quite well with Volume 1 in the series at number 13 with sales of the initial Bleach volume running at about 80% of Naruto Vol.1 for the year.
Speaking of Naruto, the best-selling manga of the year so far is Naruto Vol. 12, which has sold over 20,000 copies and finished at number 7, preceded by two other Viz Media releases, the shojo titles Hana Kimi Vol. 16 at number 5 and Absolute Boyfriend Vol.3 at number six. Del Rey's Tsubasa Vol. 12 was at number eight followed by Naruto Vol. 1 and Vol.2.
Marvel's Astonishing X-Men Vol. 3, written by Joss Whedon jumped from #257 all the way to number 11 and should move up even further on next week's list. The only other non-manga releases in the Top 50 were DK Publishing's Marvel Encyclopedia at number 33 and DC Comics' Watchmen at 37, which gives manga 23 out of the top 25 and 46 out of the top 50.
The one bona fide new hit of 2007 so far is Viz Media's Vampire Knight, which finished at number 12, and is the fifth bestselling manga release of 2007 so far with nearly 12 thousand copies sold. Viz Media dominated the BookScan list this time with 17 out of the top 25 titles.
