According to The Hollywood Reporter J.J. Abrams, creator of the Lost, Alias, and Felicity TV series, has signed to direct the next Star Trek film for Paramount. Although rumors have connected Abrams to the project for almost a year (see 'J.J. Abrams on Star Trek Feature'), he didn't actually come to terms with Paramount and sign a contract to direct the film until last Friday.
Abrams, who previously directed Mission Impossible 3 for Paramount, will direct from a screenplay he has written with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. The news that Abrams has signed with Paramount is a solid indicator that the film, which is a 'prequel' to the original Star Trek TV series and features Spock and Kirk at Star Fleet Academy, will actually be made.
The new Star Trek movie, which will feature a youthful cast, is a clear attempt to reinvigorate the franchise, which was once a licensing juggernaut.
