The day after the popular series finished its rookie run and NBC revealed it was preparing a six-episode spin-off, Universal announced the August 28th release of the seven-disc Heroes Season 1 DVD Box Set. The Heroes DVD Box Set will contain all 23 first season episodes as well as a number of unspecified extras. It will be available in standard DVD format ($59.98) as well as in HD-DVD ($99.98).
The six-episode spin-off series, Heroes: Origins, will air during the Heroes timeslot on Monday nights when the regular Heroes series goes on hiatus. Network execs were reportedly upset that Heroes lost steam (and ratings points) during long gaps between new episodes. The Origins episodes will introduce new characters and NBC will allow viewers to vote on which of the new characters will get to join the cast of the regular Heroes series for the third season. With the addition of the 6 episodes of Heroes: Origins NBC has now ordered a total of 30 episodes of the superhero-themed series for the 2007-2008 season.
