The Simpsons Movie, which was released in July and earned over $180 million at the domestic box office plus close to $325 million overseas, will be released on DVD in North America on December 18th (and in the rest of the world on December 3rd).  The Simpsons Movie DVD will be available in both a regular single disc edition (MSRP $29.98) and in a Blu-Ray hi-def disc (MSRP $39.98).

The Simpsons Movie DVD contains multiple extras including deleted scenes ('Emperor Moe,' 'Sausage Truck,' 'DMV,' 'Springfield News,' 'Russ Cargill-Levels,' plus an alternate ending), commentaries (by James L. Brooks, Matt Groening, Al Jean, Dan Castellaneta, and others), and special features (Tonight Show and American Idol promos, 'Let's All Go to the Lobby,' and alternate character designs).

A massive multi-million dollar marketing campaign, which will include major television and online components as well as innovative in-store displays, will help drive sales during the crowded holiday season.

The fourth quarter DVD market will indeed be highly competitive thanks to the release of titles that garnered 25% more box office earnings than did the theatrical DVDs that debuted in Q4 2006.  Q4 2007 will see the arrival of a number of summer blockbuster hits including Spider-Man 3 (2007's top grossing film), Transformers, The Bourne Ultimatum, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Shrek 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, and Rush Hour 3.  Industry insiders are hoping that the potent lineup of Q4 releases will shore up DVD sales, which have been soft so far in 2007.
