Pioneer Animation announced the August 13 release of the first DVD volume of the anime comedy-drama series Strawberry Eggs.  Released in Japan in 2001 as I, My, Me -- Strawberry Eggs, the show was produced by Pioneer Animation and animated by TNK, the creators of the Hand Maid May series.  The first volume of Strawberry Eggs, 'Makeup Exam,' includes four episodes of the series, while the other three volumes each contain three episodes.  Each of the four DVDs will carry an SRP of $29.98 and Pioneer will release them on a bimonthly schedule.  The disks will contain a number of cool extras including 15-minute video segments concerning classroom, faculty, and tenant relations.  Other more conventional extras include a full color art gallery, a glossary of Japanese school terms, live action TV ads, and interactive character commentaries.

Strawberry Eggs is the saga of a young teacher from the far northern reaches of Japan, who comes to the big city with big hopes, but can only find work in his chosen profession by resorting to dressing like a woman in order to snag a teaching position at an all-girls school with an all-female faculty.  In addition to cross-dressing our hero has to use a voice modulator to bridge the enormous 'pitch' gap between the normal speech patterns of Japanese men and women (two different voice actors are used to portray the character in male and female modes).  As in Tootsie, Some Like It Hot, and Bosom Buddies, much of the humor in Strawberry Eggs comes from the difficulties the teacher has in maintaining his charade.
