No single publisher dominated the nominations for the 2008 Eisner Awards. Dark Horse led the pack with 12 outright nominations (and 4 shared), while traditional Eisner powerhouse DC Comics was right behind with 11 nominations (and 6 shared), followed by Marvel with 11 (and 2), Image Comics with 8 (and 1), and AdHouse Books with 6 (and 1). Two companies, Oni Press and Drawn & Quarterly earned 5 nominations, while four publishers including Viz, Renaissance Press, Scholastic, and Sunday Press garnered four nods. First Second, Archaia Studio Press, Hyperion and Top Shelf all earned three nominations.
Five creators received four nominations including James Sturm (Satchel Paige: Striking Out Jim Crow), Joss Whedon (Buffy, Astonishing X-men, Sugarshock), Fred Chao (Johnny Hiro), and Jimmy Gownley (Amelia Rules). Chris Ware (Acme Novelty Library), Shaun Tan (The Arrival), and Jae Lee (
Japanese creators received an unprecedented level of attention in the 2008 Eisner nominations. Takeshi Obata received a “Best Penciller” nod for his work on Death Note and Hikaru no Go (both from Viz Media), while Fumi Yoshinaga was nominated in the “Best Writer/Artist” category for Flower of Life (Digital Manga), Kiyohiko Azuma’s Yosbuba&! (from ADV) got a nomination in the “Best Publication for Kids” category, Naoki Urusawa’s masterful Monster (from Viz Media) was included in the prestigious “Best Continuing Series” category, Osamu Tezuka's Apollo's Song (from Vertical) made it into the "Best Archival Collection" category, and Fumiyo Kouno’s “Town of Evening Calm” (published by Last Gasp) received a “Best Short Story” nomination.
Six manga series were nominated in the manga-specific ‘Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Japan’ category including: Jiro Taniguchi’s The Ice Wanderer and Other Stories (Fanfare/Ponent Mon), Osamu Tezuka’s MW (Vertical), Taiyo Matsumoto’s Tekkonkinkreet: Black & White (Viz Media), Fumiyo Kouno’s Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms (Last Gasp), Naoki Urusawa’s Monster (Viz Media), and Yuichi Yokoyama’s New Engineering (Picturebox). In addition two manga-based volumes, Jason Thompson’s Manga: The Complete Guide (Del Rey) and Understanding Manga and Anime by Robin Brenner (Greenwood Publishing) received nods in the “Best Comics Related Books” category.
