Dreamworks has optioned the rights to the Platinum Studios’ mini-series Atlantis Rising for a live action movie. The property was brought to the studio by the hot writing/producing duo of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, whose credits include The Legend of Zorro, Transformers, and J.J. Abrams’ new Star Trek movie. Kurtzman and Orci are currently working on Transformers 2.
Platinum Studios CEO Scott Rosenberg, who came up with the concept for Atlantis Rising—an alien invasion saga in which the invaders come from an underground/undersea civilization—is on board as a producer as well. Dreamworks is also working on Cowboys & Aliens, another Platinum Studios property (see “Iron Man Scribe Tackles Cowboys & Aliens”).
The fifth and final issue of the Atlantis Rising mini-series, which is written by Scott O. Brown and drawn by Tim Irwin and Andy Elder, is due out later this month.
