Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing the DVD of Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud’s Persepolis (MSRP $29.98) on June 24th. The animated film, which was nominated for an Academy Award, is based on the graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi and Sony has prominently positioned the phrase “Based on the graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi” on the front of the DVD. The DVD features an anamorphic widescreen transfer of the film with both English and French soundtracks. Extras include commentaries on select scenes, comparisons of the graphic novel and animation, a “Hidden Side of Persepolis” featurette, and a 2007 press conference at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the “Jury Prize.”
Sony botched the theatrical release of Persepolis by releasing the subtitled version first and withholding the English language version until April, well after the Academy Award nomination buzz had dissipated--but the film has still earned $4.4 million at the domestic box office and has a chance to reach a wider audience on DVD. For DVD viewers interested in obtaining the graphic novel, the perfect answer is Pantheon’s Complete Persepolis ($24.95) which is a 342-page compendium including both Persepolis graphic novels.
