Warner Home Video will release the first DVD of the Bakugan anime on August 26th. The Bakugan: Battle Brawlers, a single-disc release, will include the first five episodes at a $14.98 MSRP, along with trading card pack-ins. The anime series did well in its premiere (see “Bakugan Anime Strong in Debut”), and ratings are continuing to hold up fairly well.
The game from Spin Master has been out at mass in the U.S. since January. Although we’re not hearing of blockbuster sales from that channel, there is an aftermarket for the rarer items developing online. A spokesperson from Spin Master, which makes the game, recently told the Boston Globe that the company expects to sell $100 million worth of the “games, cards, and characters” in the U.S. this year.
The first North American release was in Canada, where it was one of the bestselling toy lines last year. The popularity was great enough to inspire counterfeiting, which Spin Master began seeking to suppress earlier this year. Between early February and May, over 2200 counterfeit Bakugan Battle Brawler items were forcibly removed from sale, and a combination of Canadian Federal Court Order Anton Piller Orders and cease and desist letters were served on 15 locations in Ontario and Quebec.
