The Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of the ALA, which has announced its lists of graphic novels, fiction, and non-fiction books for teens this week has also released a list of “2009 Fabulous Films for Teens.”  The list includes a number of DVDs that were released in 2008 like the animated adaptation of Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, Seth Rogen’s raunchy coming-of-age saga Superbad, and Diablo Cody’s witty Juno, as well as some films that were released in previous years such as Miyazaki’s masterful fantasy Spirited Away, and Gurinder Chadha’s soccer-themed Bend It Like Beckham.

Special mention should be made of another DVD that was released here in 2008--Kitani Ishikawa’s Love*Com, which is based on the shojo manga by Aya Nakahara.  Viz Media has released both the manga and the live action film here in North America, and both versions of this saga of budding teenage love between a shy tall girl and a dynamic short guy are worth checking out, thanks to a deft touch with romantic comedy displayed in both manga and its subsequent live action adaptation.
