In March Hermes Press will release Filmed in Supermarionation: A History of the Future by Stephen La Riviere ($39.99), a 208-page history of the television productions of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson. The full color 9” x 11.5” art book is packed with hundreds of never-before-seen production shots, artwork, and still photos. It covers every aspect of the creation of Anderson’s cult-favorite TV series such as Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Secret Service, and Joe 90.
Anderson’s TV series with their unique electronic system that made the specially modified marionettes that he used more lifelike than previous stop-motion puppet productions have developed a cult following on both sides of the Atlantic. The U.K. toy manufacturer Sixteen 12 (formerly Product Enterprises), which is represented here in the States by Davis Marketing Services, has produced two ranges of collector-oriented products based on Anderson’s creations—a line of die cast vehicles, and a high-end series of exquisitely-crafted prop replicas.
