Home video sales of anime have been declining steadily in Japan over the past several years and that trend continued in 2008, according to the Japan Video Software Association.  Anime home video sales (DVD, Blu-ray, and UMD) declined 13% in 2008, to ¥77.9 billion ($793 million) from ¥89.4 billion in 2007 ($910 million). 

Production of new shows in Japan is also dropping, which portends further reduction in home video sales in the future.
