ActionAce.com, the troubled e-commerce site with its primary focus on the red-hot Japanese import toy category has stopped taking orders, effective as of midnight February 15th.  As reported in this space previously (see  'Pop Culture E-commerce'), Action Ace had resumed taking orders after a shutdown and management change last summer.  Given that the stated reason for this shutdown is a move of operations to Asia, it seems unlikely that this company will be a significant U.S. player unless a buyer can be found.  Action Ace was probably the highest-flyer of the venture-funded pop culture e-commerce sites focusing on the niches inhabited by specialty retailers, and its history reflects the history of the e-commerce boom and bust of which it was a part.  After raising a large amount of venture money in 1999, the company marketed itself heavily for the Christmas season that year, including substantial use of radio ads.  As venture money started to focus on original entertainment content, B2B, and Asian expansion, Action Ace followed, with attempts to develop original Flash animations, a wholesale operation, and a China.com-style positioning.  Its fate also reflected the bust in Internet venture-funding, with a temporary shut-down last summer, a revival on life support as its largest investor attempted to get some value from its investment, and a second shut-down last week.
