The first step toward an expansion of the San Diego Convention Center took place this week, with the transfer of a 7-acre plot of land from the Port Comission to the Center, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. This opens the way for a planned $753 million expansion of the Center, which has yet to be funded.
San Diego Comic-Con, which has been maxed out at the current center for the last several years, is currently making a decision about its next three year contract, a period for which it’s getting a strong pitch from the Anaheim Convention Center (see “Comic-Con Wooed by Anaheim”).
The Convention Center has turned away nearly 400 events over the past few years due to insufficient space, according to the report.
