Disney CEO Robert Iger revealed that the company is planning a Marvel block of programming for its Disney XD channel in his Q2 conference call with analysts Tuesday after the close. “We have two series in production and/or development,” he said, “and we hope that will expand significantly over the next few years.”
The two shows in development are Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (see “Avengers Series on Disney XD”), which launches this fall; and Ultimate Spider-Man (see “Ultimate Spider-Man Animated Series”), which launches Fall 2011.
Disney has two goals for the Marvel block. “We are already licensing Marvel product for the channel and we’re stepping up that activity both as a means of growing ratings for the channel, and thus growing advertising and distribution, but also as a means of helping to use the channel to strengthen the Marvel brand and to put a real spotlight on it,” Iger said.
