Wowio, which just completed a $1.7 million financing round, has acquired DrunkDuck from Platinum Studios.  DrunkDuck, a Webcomics site, was acquired by Platinum in 2006 (see “Platinum Studios Acquires DrunkDuck”).  Wowio launched in 2006 with a business model based on free comic PDFs carrying advertising (see “Digital Comics a Growing Comic-Con Presence”). 

Platinum has used DrunkDuck as a way to distribute digital versions of some of its titles.  It previewed Cowboys and Aliens, now being adapted as a major theatrical release, on the site (see “Platinum Pre-publishing Cowboys and Aliens”); the title is currently available free on the site. 

Wowio has also recently acquired WEvolt, a social networking site currently in beta and plans to integrate the sites.
