In the wake of the announcement on Wednesday that comiXology would be offering digital DC Comics for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad (making it the only app to offer comics from both of the Big Two), it’s also worth noting that the comiXology Web store opened within the last couple of weeks.  This gives comiXology customers the option of buying comics on one platform and reading them on another, the only digital comics offerings so endowed.

Unlike the apps for Apple devices, the comiXology Web store does not provide purchasers a downloaded copy, but allows reading the comic on the desktop.  Using the same login, a comiXology customer that purchases a comic through iTunes can also read it on the comiXology Website.  And conversely, a comic purchased on the Web can be downloaded through iTunes using the same login.  Soon, copies on Apple devices and the Web store will even have the page the owner's copy is opened to synched.

The new comiXology Web store does not include Marvels, which are offered on the Web through Marvel’s subscription Website.

The DC Comics app (see “DC Goes Digital”) was #3 in the Top Ten Free iPad Apps on Thursday.
