With his new movie Machete set to debut, it appears that director Robert Rodriguez is in negotiations to direct a Deadpool movie for Fox. Ryan Reynolds, who played Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, is still attached to star as the “Merc with a mouth” in a film that will mix humor and ultra-violence, a Rodriguez specialty.
The L.A. Times’ 24 Frames blog indicates that Rodriguez is deep in negotiations with Fox, though no deal has been signed yet. The fact that the studio sent Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick’s Deadpool script to Rodriguez indicates that Fox is interested in moving ahead with a second X-Men related project now that X-Men First Class appears to be heading for production with Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) at the helm.
Rodriguez’s next project is a reboot of his Spy Kids children’s movie franchise, Spy Kids 4. If he does sign on to direct a Deadpool film, it could push the start of a Sin City sequel even farther into the future (see “Sin City 2”).
