OverDrive, which offers audiobook and ebook services to libraries, is expanding its digital graphic novel service.  OverDrive provides infrastructure that allows libraries to buy and “lend” digital books to its patrons, and that model is now being applied to an increasing number of graphic novels.  It uses the PDF format for graphic novels. 

Publishers currently active in the program include:

Tokyopop, with 264 volumes, almost half of which, including Hetalia, are available worldwide.  Other notable titles and series include Blade of Heaven, Return to Labyrinth, Star Trek, Vampire Kisses.

Marvel, with 291 volumes, including Fantastic four, Marvel Adventures, Classic Literature in Comic Format, Wolverine, X-Men.

Lerner, with 53 educational volumes, geared primarily at 7- to 12-year-olds.

Coughlan, with 64 educational volumes, also geared primarily at 7- to 12-year-olds.

Other publishers in the program include Hachette and John Wiley & Sons.

Over 10,000 libraries are currently offering digital books via OverDrive.  At this time, the service is primarily for the desktop, although PDFs are also readable (in b/w) on the Sony Reader, nook, and Kobo devices, among others.
