Comic book artist Paolo Rivera (Daredevil) has produced a super cool poster for Joe Johnston’s Captain America: The First Avenger that hits all the right vintage notes. Rivera’s work is way “too cool for school” to be used in the actual marketing campaign for the film, but 100 copies have been made as a special memento for members of the cast and crew of the film, which opens on July 22nd.

On his blog Rivera explains how he talked Marvel into letting him create the poster and how he fashioned it. The sock to the Fuhrer’s jaw is a direct reference to Simon & Kirby’s Captain America #1 from March of 1941, eight months before the U.S. government actually went to war against the Axis powers. As impressive as the combination of movie stills and art in Rivera’s design is, the artist’s hand lettering (all but the fine print at the bottom was done by hand) is even more important in creating the authentic vintage vibe.
