Summit Entertainment’s attempt to reboot the Highlander fantasy film franchise got its director.  Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, the Spanish director who helmed 28 Weeks Later and the horror/thriller Intruders starring Clive Owen that debuted at the Toronto Film Festival, will direct the remake of the 1986 cult sci-fi/fantasy film that starred Christopher Lambert and featured Sean Connery in a supporting role.

The news that Summit has tapped Fresnadillo comes almost exactly a month after Justin Lin left the project due to scheduling conflicts (see “Justin Lin Ankles Highlander Remake”).  As ICv2 pointed out at that time, Summit likes the script for the remake by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway and the studio is very anxious to get this project moving.

The L.A. Times confirmed that Fresnadillo was directing Highlander and also reported that Alcon Entertainment was planning a remake of Kathryn Bigelow’s breakthrough film Point Break, with a new version set in the world of extreme sports rather than among surfers like the original.
