Mayfair Games has announced the Q4 release of Catan: Oilsprings, a new resource management-intensive scenario for the bestselling board game.  Mayfair also announced that in conjunction with Alliance Game Distributors, it is sponsoring the Worldwide Catan Championship, which will be held from September 14th through the 16th at Normandy Farm in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania.  This will mark only the second time that the worldwide Catan Championship event has been held in the U.S.

 

The Catan: Oilsprings scenario will be available first as a PDF on October 19th, and will be published in paper form later in Q4 by Mayfair Games worldwide, except in Germany where it will be distributed by Kosmos.  Developed in conjunction with the World Watch Foundation, the scenario forces the settlers of Catan to see the discovery of oil on their holdings as a two-edged sword.  On the one hand it can increase resource yields and allow a settlement to grow faster, on the other in this game (unlike real life) the players need to assess the damage that oil does to the environment, including the possibility of climate devastation, which would result in all players losing the game.
