David Seigler of Ground Zero Comics in Tyler, Texas writes in and shares his store's sales experience with DC's New 52 titles.
I looked at my new comic rack toward the end of Wednesday and the disparity between DC and Marvel was striking. Just to be sure, I did some quick counts. At that point (admittedly after only a single day of sales) I had sold three times as many copies of Batgirl #3 as I had Avenging Spider-Man #1. I found it difficult to believe -- and certainly counter intuitive. I also found that I had sold more than twice as many copies of Demon Knights #3 as I had either Avenging Spider-Man or Marvel Point One.
Now, as they say in the infomercials -- your results may differ!
We've pumped the New DC books pretty hard -- from our Midnight Release of Justice League #1 through offering coupons for the #2 issues. However, we've worked hard promoting books before and not experienced anywhere near the return that we have with these books. Frankly, there's a level of excitement in my store that I haven't seen in a solid decade. I have twenty-something coming in not only ready to buy these books, but also anxious to talk about them. I really didn't think I'd see this kind of enthusiasm again.
Certainly there have been some misfires. With fifty two books, how could there not? And, I'm not naive enough to think that this upward trend won't level off and/or drop back before long. But we've seen both lapsed DC customers return, quite a few new readers drawn in by the buzz and even a decent amount of former Marvel die-hards that have started picking up their first DC books.
The only downside I have seen is that I've been behind the curve in adjusting some of my Marvel numbers downward. Maybe DC will offer some fancy variants if I send them stripped covers from a dozen or so Fear Itself tie-ins.
