Universal and Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me) are developing a Woody Woodpecker feature, according to Hollywood Reporter.  They’re negotiating with John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky, writers and executive producers of King of the Hill, The Goode Family, and the new Beavis and Butthead, to write the screenplay.
Woody Woodpecker dates back to 1940 as a star of theatrical cartoons, and appeared on television from 1957 until 2002, with a brief break in the 90s.  The property was developed and owned by Walter Lantz, who appeared on the TV show as himself.  Mel Blanc voiced the character briefly in its early years.
Several DVDs of Woody cartoons have been released in recent years, but there has not been a comprehensive collection of the entire oeuvre.
