Marvel Comics released a bare bones teaser today that appears to indicate the return of the X-Treme X-Men in July, though the only definite word is that fans will have to wait for Marvel Editor Tom Brevoort’s “Talk to the Hat” panel on Saturday, May 17th at 4pm at WonderCon to find out exactly what is going on.

Marvel created X-Treme X-Men as a third X-Men title in 2001, when the world of X-Men comics underwent a major upheaval.  The series lasted through 46 issues, all of which were written by Chris Claremont (Salvador Larroca drew the first 24 issues, while Igor Kordey provided the art for the final 22).  The series was replaced by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday’s Astonishing X-Men in 2004.  Given the major changes occurring in the X-Men universe in 2012, it may make sense to bring back the X-Treme X-Men, though the makeup of the team may be quite different.

The X-Treme X-Men’s original lineup included Storm Rogue, Gambit, Bishop, Sage, Thunderbird, Psylocke and Beast. Beast left and Psylocke was killed in the early issues.  New characters introduced in the series included Lifeguard (Heather Cameron) and Slipstream (Davis Cameron), and the Red Lotus (Paul Hark).
