Oni Press has announced the August 8th release of the Scott Pilgrim Color Edition Hardcover, Vol. 1 ($24.99).  This will be the first time any of Scott Pilgrim’s adventures have been presented in color, and it will feature a brand new cover by Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley.  Oni will publish two volumes of Scott Pilgrim in color per year with Volume 2 slated for an October, 2012 publication.  The new full color hardcovers will be in a larger 6” x 9” format than the original digest-size black-and-white editions.  Oni does plan on keeping the black-and-white editions in print, which will give consumers a choice of the original B&W books or the new color editions.

Schuster-award nominee Nathan Fairbairn, the colorist for Batman Incorporated and Swamp Thing, will provide the digital coloring for all six volumes of the Scott Pilgrim series.

A 2010 Scott Pilgrim film directed by Edgar Wright was a critical success, though a commercial failure in that it failed to earn its cost back theatrically.  Nevertheless the attention created by the film made the Scott Pilgrim series of graphic novels, the #1 graphic novel property in North America in 2010 with over a million copies in print in North America alone.  In spite of the film’s short run, which was over by October 2010, O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim books continued to sell well throughout 2011—in fact the property remained at the top of ICv2’s “Top 10 Fiction & Reality” list of top graphic novel properties for the entire year of 2011 (see “Top 10 Fiction & Reality Properties—2011”).
