Monday was a big day in the digital comics world, with announcements from Viz, Marvel, and iVerse.
Viz Media announced formation of Viz Labs, a new division of the company that will focus on digital anime and manga distribution, bringing together engineering and digital business efforts from across the company. It will be led by Gagan Singh, who has joined the company as Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. Singh comes to the company from his role as CEO at West Side Labs, a long-time technology partner of Viz, and arrives with advanced degrees from Harvard, MIT, and UC Berkeley. Viz will add new engineering talent to join its existing staff for the new division.
Marvel announced the opening of a Web store for digital comics, where fans can buy digital comics that sync with their iOS or Android apps, or the Comics by comiXology apps.
iVerse Media announced ComicsPlus Library Editions, a new pay-per-checkout program for digital comics in libraries. The program is being led by Josh Elder of Reading with Pictures. Content will be accessed through the library’s Web portal, and will be readable on most major devices. Libraries will be able to control content and patron accessibility. The revenues from the checkouts will be split among participating publishers.
