A backstage snapshot that shows child actress Anjini Azhar with fellow Star Trek 2 cast members Simon Pegg (Scotty) and Anton Yelchin (Chekov) reveals new Star Fleet uniforms that represent a marked departure from the traditional red, gold, and blue. The sharp brown unis are closer to the grey uniforms that Abrams employed in his highly successful 2009 reboot, but these new brown costumes appear to be even more form-fitting and sharply tailored.
Perhaps the most striking departure in the new uniforms is the hat. Though it contains the familiar Star Trek emblem, the new hat’s high-rising front brim is something quite different. Still some hardcore Trekkers see a parallel to a uniform hat that appears on Captain Pike’s desk in "The Cage," the first pilot episode for the original Star Trek TV series. But the shape of the new hat with its radical upswing is much closer to contemporary Russian military caps than to the hat from "The Cage," which is closer in shape to a railroad engineer’s cap.
Shooting on J.J. Abrams’ second Star Trek movie wrapped last month (see "'Star Trek' Shooting Wraps”). The film is now in the midst of a year-long post-production phase during which the special effects will be created and added to the movie, which is slated to debut nationwide on May 17th, 2013.
