With digital comics sales growing at a furious pace this year (see "70 Million in Digital Comics"), it was inevitable that digital initiatives would be a big part of the announcements at San Diego Comic-Con this year, and publishers and digital comics companies did not disappoint. 

Industry leader comiXology announced two new publisher deals, with Fantagraphics Books and Abrams ComicArts, expanding the number of titles offered on its platform.  Among the Fantagraphics titles that will be offered is Love and Rockets: New Stories, which will go day and date in the regular and CMX-HD formats with #5.  Abrams ComicArts titles available at launch include My Friend Dahmer, Empire State: A Love Story (or Not), Mom’s Cancer, Fairy Tales for Angry Little Girls, and Cats, Dogs, Men, Women, Ninnies & Clowns: The Lost Art of William Steig.

Comixology also launched a Simpsons app, which contains select Bongo Comics backlist titles and which will include new issues after a one month window.  Bongo Comics are also available on the comiXology app on all platforms.

And comiXology announced a Metro style app for the Windows 8 Release Preview. 

iVerse Media announced three new features for its ComicsPlus platform.  Publisher tools allowing publishers to convert PDFs, CIP files, or other supported image formats to the iVerse platform will be launched in Q3. 

iVerse has also announced that it will begin offering PDF versions of titles for which publishers wish to offer the DRM-free format.  Copies of titles on which the option is offered that are purchased on the iVerse platform can then also be downloaded in a PDF format, which will be stamped with the account username of the purchaser. 

And iVerse also announced a crowdfunding tool, Comics Accelerator, which will allow publishers and creators to seek funding for comics projects.  It will include Publisher Hubs, where marketing for the publisher’s projects will be centralized; Digital Reward Delivery, which will allow immediate fulfillment of digital incentives to backers after a project has been funded; and a Reserve Funding Option, wwwhich will allow project creators to set a reserve goal that will allow them to accept funds if they get close enough to their original goals. iVerse will charge 5% of funds raised, up to a maximum of $2500. 

Archie announced a new Mega Man app on the iVerse platform. 

Viz Media announced that its Viz Manga digital platform will now be available on Android as well as iOS devices.

New company Madefire launched its iPad app at Comic-Con with new content by a number of creators including Dave Gibbons, Bill Sienkiewicz, Garry Gianni, Mike Carey, and others.  The new app displays and allows for the creation of Motion Books, which use "space, time, motion, and sound to control how the story unfolds onscreen."

NBM announced that its Eurotica graphic novel titles are now available on the AveErotix Website and Android tablets.
