WizKids has announced a new game for kids featuring gross-out contests as the basis of competition. Scheduled for fall release, the game will be played with painted plastic figures on clicky bases. Kids are the leaders of teams of Creepy Freaks, who compete in Freak Outs using such maneuvers as hairball spitting, snot blowing, and dropping brains out of skulls. WizKids is calling it a '3D Trading Game.' It will be sold in starters and boosters, a la CMGs, with a DVD in every starter complete with rules, effects, and a cartoon showing the basics of play.
There's currently a 3-minute trailer on the WizKids Website showing the basic story of the game, along with a Freak Out, and the style is heavily influenced by anime in the animation style, and by Japanese CCGs in the game play. Combining those already successful elements with gross-out contests sounds like a recipe for a hit to us. Given the role of animation in the marketing of this game, we suspect that WizKids is attempting to line up a TV show to support sales and build on the storylines developed for the game.
