NYCC News: At the New York Comic Con Marvel Comics announced that writer Nick Spencer (Morning Glories, Thief of Thieves) will write Secret Avengers #1, a new Marvel NOW! title that will debut in February. Luke Ross (Spider-Man, Green Lantern, Captain America) will provide the interior art for the new series.
Formed by Nick Fury in the wake of the Siege event, the Secret Avengers are basically a Black Ops superhero team created to thwart major threats before these dangers even become apparent to the general public. Spencer is no stranger to the title having writing the first Secret Avengers Point One issue as well as three Secret Avengers Fear Itself one-shot tie-ins.
The current Secret Avengers title will end with #37. While few details about the new Secret Avengers title were released at the NYCC, Marvel did make it clear that the Marvel NOW! Secret Avengers will be a unit of the larger S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, and thus that Secret Avengers will primarily be a S.H.I.E.L.D. title, which ties in nicely to Marvel’s current emphasis on the organization that includes a Joss Whedon-penned live-action S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series (see "Whedon, Marvel Prep 'S.H.I.E.L.D' Series”). Spencer’s Secret Avengers team that includes Mockingbird, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Hulk is not only a formidable force in its own right, it also has plenty of potential for intra-group squabbles with Mockingbird and her ex-husband Hawkeye and the always fractious Hulk.
