Today's Variety reports that Gale Ann Hurd, the producer of Universal's summer blockbuster The Hulk, is teaming with Emmett/Furla films to develop the Micronauts for feature film and television. Hurd, who is also producing The Punisher film currently in development, is well aware of the Micronauts potential. Developed in Japan by Takara as a line of space age toys with interchangeable parts, the Micronauts were a huge hit here in the U.S. where Mego Toys sold more than $300 million worth of product in the 1970s and 80s. The Micronauts also spawned a Marvel comic book series that ran some 58 issues from 1979-1984.
Although this project is a long way from either the big screen or the 'vast wasteland,' it has definite potential for pop culture retailers and definitely bears watching. Devil's Due has successfully revived the Micronauts comic line (see 'Devil's Due Gets Rights To Micronauts'), while Palisades Marketing is doing the same thing with the Micronauts toys (see 'Palisades Maturing Line Has Retro Tint'). Stay tuned for more details.
