Fox has lost the movie rights to Daredevil, which have reverted to Marvel, according to Newsarama. Fox was under a deadline to get a film into production by October 10, 2012 (see "Fox's 'Daredevil' Reboot in Trouble"), which it failed to do.
A new film based on Daredevil had been through extensive development since the 2003 Ben Affleck version. The production went through two directors last year alone: David Slade, and later Joe Carnahan. The handwriting was on the wall for Fox’s production when Carnahan tweeted, "Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-style superhero went up in smoke today kids" in mid-August, leaving little time for a new concept. Carnahan acknowledged as much when he said in August, "Time is NOT on anyone’s side."
What happens to the character next remains to be seen. Daredevil doesn’t seem to fit in Marvel’s Phase 2 movies building up to the second Avengers film, so a new Daredevil film may have to wait until after Avengers 2, which is currently scheduled for May 1, 2015.
