A contractor has discovered a previously unknown copy of Action Comics #1 being used as insulation in the wall of a house built in 1938, the year the comic was published.  It was found, along with newspapers also used as insulation, as he tore apart the walls of a house he’d purchased as a rehab for $10,100. 

The comic ended up grading out as a CGC 1.5, and is now being auctioned by ComicConnect.  The current top bid, with 19 days left in the auction, is $113,111.

David Gonzalez, the contractor, lost some of the potential windfall when the book’s back cover was torn in the excitement after it was discovered, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.  His wife’s aunt grabbed the book and he grabbed it back, creating the tear, according to the report.  That amounted to a condition change of 1.5 CGC points, according to ComicConnect co-owner Stephen Fishler. 

The best condition copy of the book, a CGC 9.0, was sold in late 2011 for $2.16 million (see "'Action Comics' #1 Brings $2.16 Million").
