The Warner Archive Collection has announced the DVD release of Marine Boy: The Complete First Season, one of the first anime series to air on American TV.
Premiering in 1966, Marine Boy was one of the first color cartoons to be produced in Japan but intended for first-run syndication in the United States, following Kimba the White Lion from 1965 (although three trial episodes preceded Kimba under the title Dolphin Prince). Marine Boy follows the underwater adventures of the teenage hero battling evil on behalf of the Ocean Patrol, with help from his father Dr. Mariner, Professor Fumble, his white dolphin Splasher, and young mermaid friend Neptina, among others.
The series’ voice cast shares some talents with contemporary series Speed Racer: Corinne Orr as the voice of Marine Boy, Neptina and Clicli (Trixie on Speed Racer); Peter Fernandez as Piper and Dr. Mariner (the original voice of Speed Racer); and Jack Grimes as Professor Fumble and Splasher (Chim-Chim). Jack Curtis also provided the voiceover narration for both series.
The DVD set contains 26 newly re-mastered episodes on three discs at MSRP $29.95.
