Skottie Young has created the art for this year’s Free Comic Book Day Commemorative Artist T-shirt, which will ship April 9 in the lead-up to the event. Revenues from the sales of the shirts (and posters) will support Free Comic Book Day marketing and promotional efforts.
Young is well known for his work on the Eisner Award winning Marvel series The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and most recently for the adorable "Baby" Marvel Variant covers. "I just took the spirit of the characters we all love from comics and tried to capture them," Skottie said of his inspiration for the piece. "I see it as a day of discovery for new readers, so that was my point of view when designing the shirt. A kid, new to the world of comics, looks over his shoulder and is shocked by the world he's found himself in!"
The FCBD shirt is available in black, white, and red; in adult sizes small to XXL, as well as new youth sizes small to large. The poster version, which is also new this year, has an MSRP of $7.99.
The t-shirt series started in 2010 with a design by Sergio Aragones (see "Sergio Does First-Ever FCBD Tee") and has featured designs from Darwyn Cooke (2011), Jim Lee (2012), and Jim Cheung (2013).
