Jim and Crystal Brown of Midwest Comics & Games in Quincy, Illinois took a look at the inter-company cooperation for Free Comic Book Day and saw an opportunity to do a promotion to raise money for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund:
We are getting ready for a major push within our store to benefit the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Today, we were having a discussion with several of our customers about how the major comic book publishers can raise money to fight the evils of censorship.
Since the comic industry came together so well the past two years to promote Free Comic Book Day, why can't they do the same to help benefit the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund?
Each of the major comic book publishers, at various times during the year, could either make a special comic in which all the proceeds would benefit the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, or they could make that comic a part of a popular ongoing series (like the current Batman or Sojourn titles). For the comic collecting purists, there wouldn't necessarily have to be any special markings on the ongoing comic in question, maybe a shelf talker/header card to put behind or in front of the comic to let buyers know what their purchase helps to benefit.
The companies wouldn't have to price the comics any different or charge the retailers a different amount, they could just donate all of the proceeds from that comic to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Obviously, this is something that each company would probably only want to do once a year, but if just DC, Marvel, CrossGen, Dark Horse and Image did this -- a mere five titles a year -- I have no doubt they could raise a lot of money for a very worthwhile and beneficial organization, an organization that helps to keep the government from censoring our hobby and livelihoods.
