Japanime Games will launch organized play for its Krosmaster tabletop game in April, the company announced at Toy Fair.
Eric Price, owner of Japanime Games, outlined their initial strategy. "We’re launching organized play in April. Through that, players can go to their stores, and win prizes by playing in tournaments, and hopefully, be running tournaments every week in-store."
"For sign-up, we’ll be doing a big push at GAMA for a start," Price continued. "An even bigger push will come afterwards--we’ll be sponsoring International TableTop Day (see "TableTop Day 2014 Scheduled"), so games will be sent out to stores all over the world."
He then outlined specifics on tournament structure and prizes. "It’s set up with eight-player tournaments. Every player will get a (participation prize) set of five metalized Kamas coins. As they play more and more tournaments, they collect more metal Kamas coins, and players have enough to play a whole game."
In addition to the participation prize, the top four players will get a promo figure, the top two players will get a new PVC token (playing piece, the token in the first kit will be a Tofu), and first place will get a plastic Gobball token. "We have different tokens for every tournament you play in," Price said. "There will be metalized gallons of glory, resin terrain, all kinds of things people can win."
The Krosmaster catalogue also offers kits for 16 player and 32 player tournaments.
It will be up to the stores to decide if they will charge a participation fee to offset the cost of the kits. There will be nine different kits for Season 1, and for Season 2, which begins in June, the rewards focus on Frigost promos and tokens. Season One will begin right after TableTop Day, and run for two months; with Season Two to follow.
Price also outlined how their upcoming release schedule will tie into organized play, with blind boxes for use in sealed events. "The idea of releasing the figures in blind boxes first is that they can be used for the tournaments, as draft packs," Price said. "We can promote sealed events, or constructed events, or a mixture of both. Then later on this year, starting at Gen Con, we’ll be releasing more expansions." (For the next releases, including blind boxes, see "'Krosmaster Quest,' 'Krosmaster Junior,' More.")
