Variety is reporting that a musical version of Lord of the Rings is currently in preparation and set to debut in London's West End sometime in 2005. The producers of the new musical, including film impresario Saul Zaentz (The English Patient), are set to invest some $13.1 million to get the show going. Shaun McKenna will write the book and lyrics, while Stephen Keeling and Bernd Stromberger will provide the music. The catalyst for this lavish stage production is obviously Peter Jackson's LOTR film trilogy. So far the first two installments of Jackson's three-part adaptation have earned some $1.8 billion at movie box offices worldwide (and have the potential to gross at least as much on DVD).
