Wolf of Wall Street actress Margot Robbie is in talks for a possible starring role in the live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s Ghost in the Shell.  Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) is directing the live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, which has been in development at Dreamworks since 2008 (see "'Snow White' Helmer to Direct 'Ghost in the Shell'").

Deadline reports that Robbie was in negotiations “to star” in the live-action Ghost in the Shell, which would likely mean that she would take on the role of the leader of the assault team for Public Security Section 9.  In the original that was the sexy Major Motoko Kusanagi, though doubtless the character’s name will be changed if, as expected, the story’s setting for the film is changed.

Shirow’s original Ghost in the Shell manga was originally published in 1987 and appears ever more prescient today with its vision of a computer-dominated future replete with hacker villains.  The property spawned three anime movies, an anime TV series (Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex), and multiple videogames.
