The 2014 Harvey Awards, named in honor of Mad Magazine creator Harvey Kurtzman, were handed out over the weekend at the Baltimore Comic Con, and Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples’ Saga was, unsurprisingly, given its critical and sales success (see "Top 300 Graphic Novels--August 2014," and "August BookScan--Top 20 Graphic Novels") the big winner snagging four major awards including "Best Artist" and "Best Cover Artist" for Fiona Staples plus "Best Continuing Series," and "Best Writer" (Brian K. Vaughan).
Saga is published by Image Comics as is Sex Criminals, which took home two awards "Best New Series" for writer Matt Fraction and artist Chip Zdarsky, the latter of whom also earned "Most Promising New Talent" for his work on the series. Fraction also won "Best Single Issue" (with artist David Aja) for his work on Marvel’s Hawkeye #11.
Boom Studios and its popular licensed Adventure Time comics snagged two awards "Best Original Graphic Publication for Young Readers," and the "Special Award for Humor in Comics."
Dark Horse Comics earned five awards including "Best Graphic Album--Original" and "Best Biographical, Historical, or Journalistic Presentation" for The Fifth Beatle, "Best Domestic Reprint Project" and "Special Award for Excellence in Presentation" for Best of Comix Book: When Marvel Comics Went Underground (published in association with Kitchen Sink Books), as well as "Best Anthology" for Dark Horse Presents.
Other notable awards include "Best Cartoonist," which went to Paul Pope for his work on Battling Boy (First Second), and the "Dick Giordano Humanitarian Award," which went to the late Stan Goldberg, who unfortunately passed away recently (see "R.I.P. Stan Goldberg").
